We require everyone to come with a rash guard and shorts designed for grappling. If you don’t have any grappling shorts bring any shorts without pockets as the pockets can be a cause for injuries if member’s fingers or toes get stuck inside. We sell rash guards and shorts if needed.

Without a doubt, yes! There have been many people who have had their lives radically transformed by Jiu-Jitsu. There is no other activity that, in one hour, does as thorough a job of mixing resistance training, endurance/cardio, balance, and strength.

Join our school and participate in our classes! You should be prepared to dedicate lots of time and work. It is not an overnight process but months and years of training. Anyone who wants to compete can do so at some level if they can dedicate the time and effort. We have classes on Friday afternoons specifically tailored for competition but all classes will ultimately help you with honing your skills. Becoming a competitor is not mandatory for any of our members. However, competing will provide you with invaluable insight than can be carried over to your personal life. You will be better prepared to persevere through adversity and will be placing yourself in uncomfortable situations which will lead you to learn to keep your composure when being in rough situations.

You should try doing both no matter what your goals are. The gi teaches posture, refines defensive skills, and builds specific types of physical strengths. Training without a gi builds speed and sharpens certain offensive skills. These are just a few of the many benefits each type of training can provide. It is a lot of fun to learn different holds and movements for each discipline as well as seeing where techniques intersect or need to be modified. There are competitions with both gi and no gi. Most of the top competitors are champions in both.

A “gi” is the training uniform used by traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike some martial arts that use uniforms for dress only, our gis are very functional. They are a training tool that teach skills involving grips and holds for specific movements/techniques. The gi is much heavier and stronger than uniforms used in martial arts like Karate or Tae Kwon Do. In addition to being a teaching tool, the gi is also important for building self-defense skills. If you don’t already own a gi, we sell top quality gis at the academy. We also provide loaner gis for those who don’t own one and want to try out a class.

Unfortunately we do not currently have showers in the facility.

No! Most people come from all walks of life and all body types. You will have the opportunity to advance at your own pace.

One of the best things about Jiu-Jitsu is that it brings people together. We cultivate a friendly atmosphere in class and encourage everyone to get to meet one another. We have plans for events down the line for everyone to get to know each other better and help build more cohesiveness and family feel at the gym.

Fundamentals class focuses on the main areas of standing, guard, and pinning/immobilizing as it relates to controlling your partner. We will cover most areas in a given class through live resistance with hyper focused task oriented games. We will end class with more live training giving the student the ability to continue to explore movement solutions as it leads to controlling and ultimately submission. For Advanced Jiu Jitsu the main areas of focus are the same, however, students are placed in more complex positions with added variability which allows for more movement solutions to emerge. The last 30 minutes of class will revolve around full live training with no set constraints on positions.

Our classes are structured through years of experience to minimize the chances of injuries. Instructors monitor students training constantly and also ensure that the environment is safe. For example very large and athletic people are paired with people of similar stature and build. There are no strikes in any of our classes. As with any contact sport despite our best efforts to minimize injuries there will always be some risk.

We offer everyone from beginners to experienced practitioners a free trial class. The free trial class will allow you to get a generalized overview of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) to see what works best with your schedule. The intro lesson will vary depending on what is being covered in class that day. It will involved task oriented games that involve the entire game of jiu jitsu as it relates to standing, guard, and pinning positions as they lead to submissions.
